Breadline Angel

What were his thoughts,
the man in the breadline,
standing alone in the crowd?

Did he think to himself
"will I eat today"?
Or wail and
voice it aloud?

Did he feel ashamed,
belittled, bereft,
to have to ask for a meal?

Had he once known life's
fortune and fame
making his poverty surreal?
